DVLA does not give models, only the makes, but those sites which piggy-back DVLA data all seem to use TX1 on a sample of plates. However the book is a good one "A Century of London Taxis" written by Bill Munro - a black cabs expert, with some specific detail for the anecdote: Manganese Bronze's chairman Jamie Borwick suggested Fairmile, but Jevon Thorpe - the TXI designer and Managing Director of LTI - created the TXI name with his Big Senior Management pen. So I believe the book.

We have a few comments down the years which reference TXI, but not enough of them to mount a campaign and nothing which seems to question whether we should be using TXI or TX1. I suppose if the whole world calls it TX1, probably too much grief to resist??

But is that book right? There are also sometimes errors in books
And maybe it was true for the prototype and that they changed for the production models.
What do DVLA and other sites return? TXI or TX1?

LTI taxis: we use TX1 but according to a book comment it should be TXI. The story is that when the prototype was unveiled to senior management it was labelled TAXI as the name was undecided as Fairmile was the best anyone could come up with. The Seniorest Manager simply got out his Big Senior Management pen and crossed out the A so it became TXI.

No idea if this has been spotted or discussed before, but if agreed it should be a simple block update. However everyone seems to quite happily use TX1 (eg wiki, google references etc). Doesn't affect its successor TXII or its successor's successor TX4.
