The United States Postal Service is finally looking for new trucks to replace the ancient Grumman LLV's, which were last purchased in 1994. They have six bidders for the new contract for 180,000 new vehicles. They are testing around 50 prototypes from all six in Southern Michigan, Northern Virginia and Arizona.

The six manufacturers in the running are:

AM General
Karsan Otomotiv/Morgan Olson (Turkey)
Mahindra (India, through their Troy Michigan office)
Oshkosh
Utilimaster
VT Hackney/Workhorse

The prototype from Mahindra was spotted in Michigan:

The priorities will make the trucks taller and longer, to make package delivery easier, as that is becoming more important than regular mail delivery and to make the vehicles safer and more comfortable for the drivers. They'll be the first ones with A/C.
