Which do you prefer?

I know I've left out Volvo, Audi, Jaguar and Saab but that's because I'm more interested in seeing what people really prefer out of these two particular brands. So I'm sorry wrenchhead, but you're going to have to choose between these two.

I'd rock an older MB. Those things are tanks.

Well if I must choose, In general I prefer Mercedes to BMW but the BMW 507 versus the Mercedes 300SL is a very hard choice.

However, I am like Antp - it depends more on the particular model rather than the make.

That's the point, I want people to think of the brands in general, what the badge means to you, and what people prefer between these two carmakers. Yes, I know what you mean by thinking of particular models, I'd rather have a BMW M5 than a Merc A-Class, but then I'd rather have an S-Class than a 7-series, an E-Class than a 5-Series, and a C-Class than 3-Series (Although I'd think I'd rather have a Rolls-Royce Phantom than a Maybach, that's technically a BMW now). Also I'm personally thinking of them in terms of the cars they produce today as well as their previous models, although everyone else is free to think of them however they want. Today BMW loses points in my book because thanks to Chris Bangle too many of their new models look weird (particulary the 7-series, the old one was far better). Though some might find Mercedes too conversative and therefore duller.

I do not like recent BMW models, but I like even less recent Mercedes models
I liked previous C-klasse sedan/coupé with the merged dual round lights.
In general, I prefer BMW.

I'd pick BMW if i wanted a sporty car, Benz if i wanted something classy.

Here too. I like the 335i convertibles more than those SLK350 roadsters. BMW has more sport than luxury and Benz is the opposite.

For me BMW-cars have a bad repuation. New ones were used by notorius agressive drivers, and 3 Series-cars, especially Coupé's and Convertibles, are typcial cars for young Turkish and Libanese immigrants.

Yes, I'm presenting prejudices - but it's astonishing, how often you'll get confirmations of that.

I must admit, that I haven't any relations to BMW. Noone of my family or friends owns one. I remember just one time in my life, I was transported in a BMW. It was in the Mid-70ies, when a friend of my father took me for a ride in his brand new 520.

Why didn't you include Audi too? (Even if my answer is obvious...)

I must say, that, if I look (from my view as classic-car-fan) to the cars of the 50ies, 60ies and 70ies, Audi was definetely not a part of the premium-league. Sorry, but I think, you can confirm that.

If speaking of new cars, Mercedes, new model BMWs are too ugly to watch, especially 1-series hatchback, X3, Z4 and 7-series.
