well it is not easy to state a pattern...
1993 XJ6 Sovereign - quads.
1991 Daimler Six - quads
1994 XJ12 - squares
etc etc. Trust me, I tried to find the 100% working way to identify these, but there is none.. Unless you can see the badge on the trunk or see the engine.

Well, LondonItalian did say that people modify XJ40s with different grilles and headlights and wheels, as is probably the case with the cars shown above (especially the third one). He also admitted you can't identify them for definate from most of the images on this site. However the XJ12 was quite rare (1200 out of 200,000 XJ40s made) so it's very likely most of the XJ40s on this site are XJ6s.

What about the XJ12 versions of the Series I, II, III or X300, have were they different exterior and interior wise from the XJ6s?

It might be a mistake to automatically assume that square headlights = XJ12.
I have a 1994 XJ6 that has square headlights.
in fact there are 3 XJ40's in town with square headlights. Only one is a V12.
It is not a sovereign or VDP and AFAIK the only modifications to it are the ones I'm working on.

My info is
XJ40 V12 5.3- launched sept 89
x300 V12 6.0 launched sept 94
P60SOV is last V12 built

You're wrong tali, the XJ40 V12 wasn't released until 1993.

Yes you're right -unfortunately data sheet i was looking at stupidly lumped XJ12 5.3 with XJ40 V12- although i should have known

from memory that k -reg is start of XJ40 v12s

13/07/2011 @ 19:08:59: G-MANN: Renaming XJ6 Sovereigns to Sovereign
My original comment on this subject (from here
http://www.imcdb.org/vehicle.php?id=404489 ):
I am really starting to think we've been getting it all wrong on this site by putting Sovereigns as "XJ6 Sovereign" instead of Sovereign as the model name, for XJ40s at least. Because in the original Jaguar brochures I've looked at on some sites, they list their model range as XJ6, Sovereign and Daimler. Although I'm not sure whether this should be the case with the later Jag XJ's (X300, X308, X350), or the earlier ones (Series I-III) for that matter.
What do other people think?
Currently there's 89 XJ40s listed as "Jaguar XJ6
Sovereign"
14/07/2011 @ 11:49:47: antp: Jaguar XJ12 XJ40
Were there XJ badges on these?
If not indeed we should list them as Sovereign instead of XJ6...
14/07/2011 @ 17:50:17: antp: Jaguar XJ12 XJ40
For me it is ok, but if there are many I'll do the change directly on the server.
So, I put "Sovereign" as model name where there is "Sovereign" in extra info on all Jaguar which have XJ40 as chassis code? Is that correct?
14/07/2011 @ 20:06:19: G-MANN: Jaguar XJ12 XJ40
If we're deciding that Sovereign is more correct than "XJ6 Sovereign" than yes. So you can do this without manually changing each one? I'm just wondering if we should wait for a few more people to weigh in on this, or I could ask this question on a Jaguar enthusiasts forum. But to me it's really looking like this is what it should be.
I mean really it's not exactly a totally seperate model (neither are the Daimlers), it's just a naming system, but then Bentley there was the Mulsanne, Eight, Turbo R and Brooklands and they were all the same basic design.
14/07/2011 @ 20:23:16: antp: Jaguar XJ12 XJ40
I just have to write a SQL query for that: one minute to write that, it applies the change to any number of vehicles in one time as long as I can specify exact criteria (model names, years, chassis codes, or any other vehicle-related info).
Many other makes also have different model names for different trim or version of a same base vehicle (BMW or Mercedes for example).
I'll do that tomorrow if nobody is against that, that leaves a few hours to someone to comment just in case of
17/07/2011 @ 21:22:28: G-MANN: Jaguar XJ12 XJ40
Well, Antoine? You did say it would only take a minute
